Alcohol is available for purchase at the Qatar Distribution Company. To buy alcohol there (or even enter the store) you must have a liquor permit.
To apply for a permit you need a letter from Human Resources stating your salary, since the amount of alcohol you can buy a month is calculated based on your salary. In addition to this letter you will need your passport, your Qatari national ID card, and a QR1000 deposit. You will receive your permit on the spot and can use it immediately.
Don't forget to take your permit every time you go to QDC. Attempting to use someone else's permit is forbidden, and the permit involved may be confiscated.
To find QDC, go out Salwah Road to the Wholesale Markets roundabout and turn left. Continue through one roundabout. Turn right on the next road after a large gate with flags on the pillars; there is a sign at the intersection for the Independent Secondary School of Industrial Technology, but unless you're going quite slow, by the time you can read the sign you'll be past the turnoff. Stay on that road as it curves to the left; QDC will be on your right. It is signposted. You may be asked to show your liquor permit in order to enter the parking lot. If you are going for the first time to get your permit, the letter from HR will suffice.
QDC is open 10:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. every day except Friday, when it is closed. It is also closed for the entire month of Ramadan, but has extended hours the few weeks leading up to it. In addition to this, the QDC will double your spending allowance for the month prior to being closed for Ramadan.
Do not drink and drive. While this is never a good idea, the penalties are especially harsh here.
