The Summer College Preview Program is a rigorous three-week, non-residential, non-credit bearing summer experience targeting students who have completed 10th or 11th year, with a grade point average of 3.0 (85%) or above. The program will run from June 29 to July 17, 2008. Students will concentrate on building both the academic and personal skills required to excel in math/science based college degree programs taught in English, using American approaches to teaching and learning. Although some aspects of the program will focus on majors in business administration, computer science and information systems, the experience will be useful to highly motivated students pursuing a college degree in any field.
Separate tracks will be created for students entering Grade 11 and students entering Grade 12. Students will take classes to improve skills in math and English, and to prepare for the SAT or ACT exams. The schedule will also include workshops on how to become a master student, and how to negotiate the college admission process. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, students will be assigned to one "hands on" project in business administration, computer science or information systems designed to apply concepts and principles introduced in the classroom to real world problems.
One of the important aspects of the program is that students will be immersed in a learning community of peers, faculty and staff who will encourage and support their efforts to embrace a new set of educational expectations, and to achieve academic excellence. Meta-curricular activities will also be included to build personal relationships between the groups. Students should return to high school ready to focus and approach their school work with greater motivation and personal discipline.
