About the Conference:

This is the third conference to be hosted by the Information Systems program at Carnegie Mellon University - Qatar. The conference is intended as a forum for undergraduate students with an interest in Information Systems to present their work and engage in relevant discussions with peers, faculty and experts in the field from around the region.

The conference topic remains "The Promises and Pitfalls of Information Communication Technology". Over the last several years, new information and communication technology (ICT) trends have changed the way we do business, interact and communicate (both professionally and socially), engage in commerce, and receive government services. The field of ICT has been promising to revolutionize our lives in both small and large ways. While some big promises have materialized, the impact of these ICT solutions needs to be examined and evaluated. Why were some solutions successful and others not? How can solutions be improved? Why haven't some of the other promises materialized? What are current issues and concerns with ICT locally, regionally, and globally? How can the problem of "poor delivery" of ICT be addressed? The hope is that this forum can be used to discuss the promises and capabilities of ICT and how it can be used to better the lives of individuals, while also considering possible negative impacts and why certain ICT initiatives have failed. Ultimately, as future leaders, we all seek to understand what can be done to both create awareness of and to improve the use and implementation of ICT around the world.

Some specific discussion topics are as follows:

  • ICT in businesses, governance, commerce and social networking
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • Mobile and web-based applications
  • Global IT projects and outsourcing
  • Security and privacy in ICT
  • Strategic Use of Information Technology
  • Sustainable Information Systems
  • Usability and User Interfaces of Applications
