Academic Employment Opportunities
Academic Resource Center is one of the largest employers on campus and has the employment opportunities for undergraduates: Academic coaches, peer tutors, course assistants and Summer College Preview Program course assistants.
These positions may require a 4.5 unit-training course or other, intensive training course. In addition some positions are only available to students who meet certain requirements such as a minimum GPA or minimum grade in a course. All employment opportunities in the ARC require approval of the student’s academic advisor.
Academic Coach
Academic Coaches (ACs) guide fellow students in developing more effective and efficient study skills. They work with students both in one-on-one appointments and in workshops. ACs are carefully trained to counsel students in textbook reading, test-taking, lecture note-taking, time management, and memory strategies.
Peer Tutor
Peer Tutors are usually undergraduates who assist fellow students primarily (but not exclusively) with introductory level math, engineering, science, and writing courses. They also pick up standing tutoring appointments as needed. Peer Tutors do not provide answers or solutions to homework assignments but, instead, work with the student in an effort to model problem solving strategies and explain course-specific concepts.
Course Assistant
Course Assistants (CA) are students who work with faculty and the ARC to support student learning at Carnegie Mellon Qatar. Teaching Assistants help faculty members with specific courses. Responsibilities vary, but usually include grading, assisting in class, leading recitations, tutoring, and occasionally proctoring exams.
