The Office of Student Activities fosters service learning and community engagement by connecting student organizations to local not-for-profit community service opportunities.
All students are encouraged to incorporate community service into their Carnegie Mellon experience. There are three different ways you can get involved in community service - student clubs, service trips and sustained commitment programs.
Student clubs & organizations
- Get involved with NeoMotion[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/NeoMotion], an Education City-wide student organization geared towards social responsibility and change.
- Learn more about LiveGreen[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/LiveGreen], a Carnegie Mellon Qatar student organization geared towards environmental stewardship and awareness.
- Connect with the Human Rights Club[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/Human_Rights_Club], a Carnegie Mellon Qatar student organization geared towards awareness and activities intended to assist those in need.
- Any organization can incorporate service into what they already do. Talk to your club advisors for ideas.
Service Trips
- Participate in one of many service learning trips sponsored by the Office of Student Activities. Past trips have included the Jordan trip[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/Jordan_Trip_2007] (Fall 2007), the service trips to Pittsburgh[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/PET] (Spring Break, 2005-2007), and the Summer Service in Ghana[http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/studentactivities/orgwiki/index.php/SSIG] trip (July, 2008)
- Students in Computer Science have a unique opportunity to do service learning over the summer through a course called Technology Consulting in the Global Community[http://tcinc.org/global/]. Talk to your academic advisor for more information.
Sustained Commitment Programs
- CLIP - A computer literacy program where students develop curriculum for and teach many of the people in the migrant worker population how to use technology.
- Qatar Academy Turoring Program - A year-long program where students go to QA and teach them entrepreneurial, technical and a host of other skills.
- Best Buddies - A brand new program this year pairing up students with another student from the Shaffallah Center for special needs.
- QAWS - An weekly or bi-weekly commitment to the Qatar Animal Welfare Society, where students are taken to the society to play wtih, walk and care for abandoned animals. More information to come.
