Work while you learn. Be mentored by top professionals at leading organizations. Find your true passion.

In an increasingly competitive global society, today’s graduates must possess more than superior academic knowledge and a desire to succeed. They also must gain hands-on experience in the marketplace.

To support students in their development of this crucial aspect of professional success, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar encourages students to complete internships. Through an internship, students gain practical workplace skills that complement their formal education and give them an advantage many of their peers do not have.

An internship, usually a short-term paid or unpaid employment assignment during the summer break, offers a structured learning experience in a professional work environment. This first-hand experience will give students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

Our students are actively recruited by local and regional employers for internships.  As a result of the dynamic growth in the Gulf Region, many of our interns are offered excellent employment opportunities close to home following graduation.

We strongly encourage students to invest themselves in at least two internships. While you will be able to find short-term experiences lasting a month or less during the winter break or in summer, internships are most advantageous both for the company and for you when they last three months or more.

In addition, there are a number of opportunities for students to work with faculty on research projects. If you are interested in collaborating with faculty on research, build relationships with your professors and ask them if there are opportunities to work on a project together.

In the fall and spring, the Office of Professional Development conducts The Insider’s Guide to Internships information session. All students interested in doing internship are strongly encouraged to attend.

There are a number of ways to go about getting an internship. Here are a few:

     1.  Throughout the year, the Office of Professional Development announces job and internship opportunities with a wide variety of businesses and organizations. These announcements come through email with company profiles, job descriptions, and instructions on how to apply, so it is important to pay attention to what arrives in your inbox.

     2.      Attend Making the Connection Lecture Series, sponsored by the Office of Professional Development. Each semester we invite representatives from several top companies, from the CEO of Citigroup to the internship manager for QSTP Stars of Science. Following these lectures, from which you will learn about the company and opportunities within them, there are networking lunches during which you can talk directly to company representatives, make an impression, and get their contact information.

     3.      Vodafone Community Engagement Program: For information and to apply, please click here.

     4.      IMPAQT Program: The Office of International Education accompanies a group of students to the Pittsburgh campus in the spring. The students work collaboratively on a project. For more information on the program, please contact Office Of International Education.

     5.      Visit Khadra Dualeh, Director of Professional Development. Brainstorm a targeted list of at least five companies and/or five positions you are interested in. Then send an email to Kdualeh@qatar.cmu.edu to set up an appointment. Khadra will discuss your options and hook you up with the right industry representatives.

     6.      Network with family, friends, faculty, and supervisors to get an idea of what’s out there in the “hidden” market.

Once you have obtained an internship, you must notify the Office of Professional Development by completing the Internship Registration Form here
